Mission

A program of the Dothan Area Chamber Foundation, the mission of Leadership Dothan is to build a stronger community by developing leaders who effectively serve and unify Dothan and Houston County. The program provides a diverse group of emerging and existing community leaders with opportunities to enhance their community knowledge, civic network and leadership skills. Objectives:

  • To conduct an annual program to help participants gain perspective on issues important to the community, interact with regional decision-makers, and identify new avenues for civic engagement.
  • To inform and develop community leaders through an intensive nine-month leadership curriculum.
  • To engage more talented, committed and diverse boards.
  • To build a leadership resource to serve future community needs.
  • To establish strong, diverse networks with leaders across all sectors.  
     

Curriculum:

  • Nine-month program with monthly day-long session from September until May. Classes study topics such as:
    • Opening and Closing Retreats
    • Team Building, Leadership Skills, Conflict Resolution
    • Health and Human Services and Quality of Life
    • Education
    • Criminal Justice System and Local Government
    • Public Safety
    • Economic Development
    • Sessions held at different locations throughout Houston County.

 

How Individuals Benefit:

  • Enhanced leadership skills, including collaboration, cultural competency and communication skills.
  • Allows them to examine their own values, philosophies and beliefs.
  • Builds trust, rapport and networks among people with different views and gives limitless opportunities to network with class members alumni.

 

Selection Criteria:

  • Application is open to all persons residing or working in Houston County. Applicants must have the full support of the organization or business they represent. Individuals may also apply.
  • Class members are chosen by the Leadership Dothan Selection Committee on their own merits based upon the information submitted on the application. The Committee seeks representation from a cross section of the community including business, labor, education, the arts, religion, government, community based organizations, ethnic and minority groups.
  • In reviewing applications, the Selection Committee looks for candidates who demonstrate the following criteria:
  • Commitment and motivation to serve the Dothan area;
  • Position of leadership in employment and/or volunteer organization resulting in the potential to have significant influence on important issues facing the community; and
  • Ability to make the time commitment required by the program.


Time Commitments:

Candidates accepted into the program are expected to fully participate in all seven session (third Thursday of each month) from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and two retreats – a two-day Opening Retreat in September and one-day Closing Retreat in May.

 


Tuition:

Tuition for each participant is $1,000 (Chamber members) and $1,500 (non-members) that covers all program costs, including all meals, transportations and materials.The incoming class will kick off each year in September.
