Travel in and around Dothan and Houston County is easy. You can
be just about anywhere in 15 minutes, and when it becomes
necessary to travel long distances, you will be glad that all
roads lead back to Dothan.
Ideally situated in the southeast corner of
Alabama, about 20 miles from the Florida and Georgia borders, Dothan
boasts an enviable accessibility to travel destinations north,
south, east, and west. You can be in the foothills of the
Appalachian mountains by driving three hours north to Birmingham, or
head for the sugar white beaches of Panama City, Florida, a short
80-mile drive south.
The cities and major commercial centers of the
Southeast can be reached within a few hours. Montgomery and
Tallahassee are less than two hours away, while Mobile, Birmingham,
and Atlanta are all about 200 miles away.
An excellent highway system intersects Dothan,
allowing people and goods to travel into and out of the area with
ease. Interstate 10 is 35 miles south; U.S. highways 231 and 431 are
north-south arteries.
Four rail systems, 37 motor freight lines, and
two bus lines serve the area. The Chattahoochee River, whose
nine-foot channel provides access to the Intracoastal Waterway and
the deep ports of the Gulf of Mexico, is only 18 miles to the east.
If you are more concerned with simply getting
around town, Dothan's transit system offers inexpensive, safe, and
reliable transportation along all principle local routes. When
business or pleasure requires that you take to the sky, Dothan's
regional airport can meet your travel needs. The general aviation
facility is owned and operated by the airport authority and offers a
full range of services. Among the features of the airport are ILS
and two operational runways; one 8,500 feet in length and one 5,000
feet in length.
Adjacent to the airport is a 240-acre industrial
park with direct access to the airport's taxiway system. The
airport's air carrier is Atlantic Southeast Airlines with services
to Atlanta.
