Economic Summit on Jobs
Location: Dothan Civic Center, 126 N. St. Andrews Street, Dothan.
The City of Dothan, Houston County and the Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce will host the first Economic Summit on Jobs. Free and open to the public, the day-long event is designed to use the combined knowledge and experience to identify opportunities that result in the direct creation of jobs or a conducive environment for job creation. Discussions around seven business topics (agriculture, aviation, entrepreneurship, infrastructure, medical and health care, quality of life and workforce development) will result in the establishment and implementation of a minimum of one idea per topic with discussion being facilitated by representatives of the Alabama Industrial Development Training. The summit begins at 7:30 a.m. with registration and continental breakfast, followed by opening remarks by the Dothan Mayor Mike Schmitz. The featured speaker for the session is Hal Johnson, president and CEO of the Upstate South Carolina Alliance. Breakout sessions in the seven areas will follow. Keynote speaker for lunch is Bill Taylor, president of the Economic Development Partnership of Alabama. After lunch, goals and action plans from the groups will be presented. Downtown Music Fest
Location: Dothan Civic Center, 126 N. Saint Andrews Street, Dothan.
Wiregrass Natives, Buddy Buie and Terry Collins along with The ALS Association of Alabama invite you to help fight Lou Gehrig's Disease by participating in the Downtown Music Festival.
It will be a very unique night of music that features songwriters and producers Buddy Buie, J.R. Cobb, Chips Moman, Wayne Carson and Bobby Emmons in a songwriter roundtable. They will discuss & sing their top hits along with a short Q&A session from audience. The songwriter roundtable will feature the musical artists performing from Dothan & the Wiregrass great musical past.
Corporate and Premium round tables are $800. Perimeter rectangle tables will be $500. Light hors dourves will be served from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Beer & wine cash bar available. General admission balcony seats are $25.00. Donations are tax deductible. A drawing for a guitar autographed by all artists will be held. Items to be auctioned off include a copy of "Heeeey Baby: Days of Beach Music", a coffee table book autographed by area musicians mentioned in the book.

Grant Writing Workshop

Troy University's Continuing Education Center will hold a series of grant workshops in September. Conducted by Courtney E. Purvis, assistant director of Troy’s Center for International Business and Economic Development, the first workshop “Introduction to Grant Writing” will be held Sept. 15. This three-hour class will introduce grant development and the process of grant writing. Participants will learn how to locate funding sources, basic grant writing tips and how to avoid common mistakes. The second workshop, a six-hour “Advanced Grant Writing” workshop, will be held in two sessions on Sept. 22 and Sept. 29. The course will help participants prepare for the commitment required as an organization to get a grant funded. In addition to advanced training in how to find funds and write grant proposals, participants will learn how to accurately reflect a proposed budget, common components that need to be included in a grant and what to do if the organization does not get funded. Human Trafficking Conference

Several community groups have come together to host a Human Trafficking Conference. Human Trafficking is a form of modern day slavery in which victims are held by intimidation or fraud for purposes of commercial sex, drug trafficking or forced labor. Locally, the Wiregrass area is recognizing that human trafficking can occur here and that it is time to bring our community together to learn about the problem and develop solutions. Continuing education credits will be available for law enforcement, social workers, counselors, clergy and others for a fee of $40; for all others, the fee to attend is $15 per person. Wiregrass Area Stand Down Dothan 2010
Location: Dothan Civic Center, 126 N. St. Andrews St., Dothan
The City of Dothan, House Of Benjamin, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 87 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3073, in conjunction with the Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System, will host Stand Down Dothan 2010. This is a grass roots community-based intervention program designed to help veterans and homeless veterans. Veterans will be brought together for a single day and provided access to a variety of community resources. Veterans will be provided a broad range of the services including food, haircuts, personal care supplies, clothing, picture ID services, health care services including flu shots, employment services, counseling services (Social Security, Food Stamps, local health and human services, employment), job referrals, referrals to housing services programs and spiritual services. Tournees Film Festival
Location: Troy University Dothan Campus, Sony Hall, 500 University Drive, Dothan.
The Troy University Dothan Campus library will showcase award-winning cinema from around the world during the Tournees Festival, a film festival designed to bring the best in contemporary French cinema to American colleges and universities. Starting September 21, one film will be screened weekly on Tuesday nights at 7 p.m. inside Sony Hall in the Library/Technology Building. Admission is free and open to the public.
